Our research team is constantly scrutinizing licenses and the companies that own them. While many of the cannacurious industry watchers focus on the publicly held companies; there is a whole other tier of private companies that have been quietly acquiring licenses across state lines. We think this is where the cannaserious observers are spending their time. These companies are harder to track due to the lack of public filings, but the license information can tell an interesting story.

Cannabiz Media worked with Wells Fargo’s Equity Research team to conduct one of the most comprehensive outreach programs to cannabis cultivators. We reached out to thousands of growers to develop a list of ~500 licensed cannabis cultivators across six states. They were reached via email and telephone surveys. The key takeaway for Wells Fargo is that “this recovery will take longer” and it has implications for the hydroponic sector for the second half of 2022. Wells Fargo has downgraded shares of Scotts Miracle Grow to Equal weight and lowered price targets on Grow Generation and Hydrofarm Holdings Group.
In 2020, Cannabiz Media started researching cannabis mergers and acquisitions as a byproduct of license tracking. M&A is a key transaction because licenses change ownership in these deals. Recently, we wrote about which MSO’s led in buying versus building cannabis stores. For this post, we want to share what we found about who advised them. This data was obtained from our Cannabiz Intelligence™ Advisor Leaderboard.

Cannabiz Media has been tracking cannabis and hemp licenses globally since 2015. Over those seven years, we have aggregated a mass of data on licenses, companies, and transactions that result in change of license ownership. After compiling 500 transactions in our Cannabiz Intelligence™ platform, we wanted to take a closer look at how key publicly traded MSOs were adding to their store footprints. Our goal was to determine which stores were “built” versus those that were “bought”.
On Thursday March 24th, the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission Board recommended approval on 68 applications for conditional licenses. This cohort includes 50 Class 1 Cultivator applications and 18 Class 2 Manufacturer applications.

These brands, unlike license assets, can cross state lines and will undoubtedly help well established companies thrive and build market share.
