Cannabiz Media’s fifth annual Point-of-Sale Software in the Cannabis Industry report is available for free download now. The 2022 report provides updated information on point-of-sale (POS) software market share across the U.S. and Canadian cannabis industries.
To produce the Point-of-Sale Software in the Cannabis Industry – 2022 Report, the Cannabiz Media research team made approximately 34,000 outbound phone calls to survey both U.S. and Canadian dispensary and retail cannabis locations about their current POS software use.
Some of the key findings in this year’s report include:
In the United States, the top five POS software providers in 2022 account for 60% of the market, but that percentage is down from 61% in 2021, 66% in 2020, 68% in 2019, and 76% in 2018.
The same five brands top that topped the 2021 POS software leaderboard in the U.S. are at the top again in 2022, but some have changed positions in the ranking. Here are the market share percentages for the top five providers:
In Canada, the top two POS software providers dominate 73% of the market. This is the first year that Cannabiz Media tracked POS software in Canadian cannabis markets, so historical data isn’t available. The top five providers in 2022 are as follows:
Starting in our 2021 POS software report, we began tracking combined market share by parent company as mergers and acquisitions became more common. The results show Dutchie’s license growth is up significantly more over last year compared to Flowhub, Akerna, and BioTrack. License growth by year by company in 2022 is as follows:
In 2021, 298 stores switched from one POS software provider to another, which was significantly higher than the 120 switches tracked in 2020. The number of switches has decreased in 2022 with just 176 reported.
Leaflogix gained the most customers from switches in the U.S., and COVA gained the most in Canada. Looking at switching data over the past three years (2020 to 2022), Leaflogix gained the most customers from switches compared to BioTrack, which lost the most customers due to switching.
For the first time, the Cannabiz Media research team began asking stores how many points of sale they have as part of our telephone survey outreach. There is a broad range across the country and stores, but the median number of POS stations is three.
Interestingly, the data shows that Leaflogix and Treez customers are likely to have more POS stations (median of five for each brand) compared to other providers, whose clients most commonly have a median of two or three POS stations.
