Now that 2023 has wrapped up we want to share our annual license round-up of which states issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses as well as trends that affect various parts of the value chain. In 2023 1,695 new dispensary and retailer licenses were issued and 4 states accounted for 60% of these licenses. This is well down from 2,750 in 2022 and 2,602 in 2021.

Here is our round-up of states that issued dispensary/retailer licenses in the 3rd quarter of 2023. So far this year we added 716 stores in Q1 2023; 471 in Q2 and just 361 in Q3. 5 states accounted for 69% of these Q3 licenses: New Jersey, Michigan, California, New Mexico, and Maine.

We recently researched the cost to purchase a cannabis store in Cannacurio #75 and found that prices varied greatly by year and state – as well as the purchaser’s overall strategy. Soon after we shared that analysis, Terrascend purchased two different dispensaries – one for $22 million and one for $6.75 million. This begged the question as to whether these purchases were exceptional by Maryland standards.

For this Cannacurio analysis we wanted to explore the prices paid for retailers and dispensaries. To do this we researched the 600+ M&A transactions we have compiled in our Cannabiz Business Intelligence offering and removed any stores that were part of a deal where other license types were also sold. That left 170 stores sold in sixteen states. We included both closed and announced deals but ignored those deals that were cancelled.

Cannabiz Media categorizes a license as a manufacturer if it fits the following description: License is for the processing (manufacturing) of marijuana-infused products, such as edibles or concentrates, but does not include cultivation or retail sale to customers.
