Cannabiz Media Client Spotlight – DataOwl

DataOwl provides point-of-sale (POS) enhancement, customer relationship management (CRM), and business operational solutions to the cannabis industry. The DataOwl software integrates all of the data in a dispensary POS system into a suite of tools that improve operations, support marketing, increase revenues, and save time.

Cannabiz Media spoke with Michael Crane, National Sales Executive at DataOwl, to learn more about how he and his team use the Cannabiz Media License Database for research, outreach, and sales growth.

Why Does DataOwl Subscribe to the Cannabiz Media License Database?

DataOwl subscribes to the Cannabiz Media License Database to research and understand state license structures, stay on top of industry updates, and identify opportunities in support of its sales and growth objectives.

“We definitely utilize the Cannabiz Media License Database heavily here at DataOwl,” shares Michael. “It’s our go-to source for notifications on new licensing. But in addition to that, we like to dig into the deeper layers that Cannabiz Media provides, which is the licensing types. We aren’t just a solution for retail dispensaries. There are many different licenses types out there that we can provide our solutions to.”

Cannabiz Media tracks a large amount of specific details about license types and individual licenses across United States and international markets, and DataOwl leverages that data strategically. Michael says, “We utilize Cannabiz Media to understand and have insight into who’s vertically integrated and who’s not. In addition to that, we use it to identify who the best contacts are and who actually runs those licenses, so we can reach out and get valuable information.”

Michael believes the Cannabiz Media License Database can’t compare to other sales tools that he has used before. He explains, “This sales tool is definitely in the culture and industry where most of the time, sales tools or lead tools are literally just leads or lists. The Cannabiz Media License Database is very dynamic, and you can tell that everybody who’s participated in working on it participates in the cannabis industry as a whole. You can clearly see that.”

According to Michael, the key to effectively using the Cannabiz Media License Database requires both strategy and execution. “Plan your strategy on making solid contact because these leads are very good contacts,” Michael advises. “They’re within the company, so it’s all about doing a value-add – not just selling to sell but actually making a communication that gives value to the operators.”

What’s Next for DataOwl?

DataOwl has been busy introducing new solutions to the cannabis industry in order to help its clients operate successfully during the COVID-19 crisis. Three major innovations recently dropped, including a remote online check-in for dispensaries to execute curbside pickups and online ordering that is now executable in three days.

The third major innovation that is rolling out is an integration with BioTrack and DataOwl’s online ordering. “We’ve always shown live inventory,” says Michael, “but now, our online orders will actually route automatically into the point-of-sale system, helping the retail staff execute all those new online orders that they started to see because of COVID-19. Previously, it was a separate dashboard they had to log into to execute that the order is ready for pickup and things like that. Now, it will happen directly inside the point-of-sale system.”
