Point-of-Sale Software in the Cannabis Industry – 2024 Report

Cannabiz Media’s sixth annual Point-of-Sale Software in the Cannabis Industry report is now available! The 2024 report provides updated information on point-of-sale (POS) software market share across the U.S. and Canadian cannabis industries.

To produce the Point-of-Sale Software in the Cannabis Industry – 2024 Report, the Cannabiz Media research team made approximately 37,000 outbound phone calls to survey both U.S. and Canadian dispensary and retail cannabis locations about their current POS software use.

Key Findings for 2024

Some of the key findings in this year’s report include:

  • There are 71 cannabis industry POS software providers in the U.S. and 52 in Canada.
  • 15 companies compete in both the U.S. and Canada.
  • Combined, the top five POS software providers in the U.S. hold 66.6% market share.
  • Combined, the top two POS software providers in Canada hold 70% market share.
  • POS software brands owned by Dutchie have a combined 34.5% market share in the U.S.

Point-of-Sale Software Leaderboards in the U.S. and Canada

In the United States, the top five POS software providers in 2024 account for 66.6% of the market, up from 60% in 2022 and 61% in 2021.

In our 2022 report we aggregated brands into one company.  Most of the top five brands still make it into this year’s leaderboard:

  1. Dutchie: 34.5% (up from 28% by rolling up Green Bits and Leaflogix)
  2. BioTrack: 11.8% (Down from 13.4% - includes Alleaves)
  3. Flowhub:  9.9% (Down from 11.8%)
  4. MJ Freeway: 6.2% (Down from 6.5%)
  5. Magestore: 4.3% - new to the list

In Canada, the top two POS software providers dominate 70% of the market down from 73%. The top five providers in 2024 are as follows:

  1. COVA: 45.3%
  2. BLAZE/Greenline: 25.1%
  3. Techpos: 6.16%
  4. GlobalTill: 6.05%
  5. barnetPOS: 2.92%

COVA and BLAZE/Greenline dipped slightly while Techpos, GlobalTill, and barnet/POS all increased.

POS Software Provider Switching in 2024

In 2020, we started keeping track of when a store changed their software from one provider to another. In 2024, we tallied 278 switches up from 222 in 2022. There were 205 in the US and 73 in Canada.

Dutchie gained the most customers from switches – racking up 139 while only losing 12.  Magestore gained 67 by displacing other providers at Trulieve. On the loss side, BioTrack dropped 45 stores with BLAZE/Greenline down 38.  Not surprisingly, we saw the greatest switches in large US cannabis markets like Colorado (27), Michigan (20) and Oklahoma (20).

Point-of-Sale Stations in 2024

Once again, the Cannabiz Media research team asked stores how many points of sale they have as part of our telephone survey outreach. There is still a broad range across North America, but the median number of POS stations in the US is 3, and in Canada is 2. Treez had the highest median with 5 with Leaflogix second with 4.
