Our research team is constantly scrutinizing licenses and the companies that own them. While many of the cannacurious industry watchers focus on the publicly held companies; there is a whole other tier of private companies that have been quietly acquiring licenses across state lines. We think this is where the cannaserious observers are spending their time. These companies are harder to track due to the lack of public filings, but the license information can tell an interesting story.

According to the Cannabiz Media License Database, states have added 1,066 licenses in the first five months of 2022. Four states have issued 100 or more licenses with Oklahoma in the lead.

On Thursday March 24th, the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission Board recommended approval on 68 applications for conditional licenses. This cohort includes 50 Class 1 Cultivator applications and 18 Class 2 Manufacturer applications.

Dispensaries and retailers have continued to come throughout 2021. 1,846 licenses were issued through August 2021, and the year ended with 2,602 licenses. Seven states issued a hundred or more licenses with Oklahoma keeping the crown for issuing the most dispensary licenses.

At the very end of 2021, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy received 1,462 applications for 73 dispensary licenses. The winners will be chosen by lottery in January 2022. Ohio is a limited license state and currently has 61 dispensaries around the state, so the addition of these news stores is significant and will assuredly be welcomed by the 231,165 registered patients in the state.

As part of the 2020 election, New Jersey voters approved a constitutional amendment to legalize cannabis. Question 1’s passage was expected, and the short constitutional change left many details for the legislature to sort out. Nearly a year later, the legislature has made progress and regulators have issued final rules to expand the medical industry into an adult use one.
